Kathleen Graham
Executive Director

Kathleen Graham joined AFPF as the executive director in December 2011. Graham is an 18-year nonprofit veteran. Previously, she served as the executive director of the Radio Television Digital News Foundation (RTDNF) in Washington, D.C. where she developed the vision and strategy for the Foundation, including its financial health, governance, professional training and student programs.

RTDNF is the educational arm of the largest association of electronic journalists, the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). RTDNF offers professional development opportunities, support of First Amendment issues, scholarships and fellowships for students.

Among many accomplishments, Graham created RTDNF’s two flagship programs: the Journalism Ethics Project and the News Leadership Project. Working with leading broadcasters, Graham led the revision of the RTDNA Code of Ethics and released a wide range of ethical coverage guidelines including social media guidelines. For more than a decade, Graham’s newsroom leadership project helped managers broaden their professional knowledge and sharpen their leadership skills.

Graham produced the 20th Annual First Amendment Awards Dinner honoring Brian Williams, anchor and managing editor, NBC Nightly News; Harvey Nagler, vice president, CBS Radio News and David Westin, president, ABC News. More than 400 news executives attended the black-tie dinner at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington.

Additionally, Graham organized a leadership summit in honor of the 50th anniversary of legendary broadcaster Edward R. Murrow’s famous “Wires and Lights in a Box” speech. At the summit, high-level news executives candidly discussed the future of the industry while reaffirming the pillars of ethics, independence and courage that have supported electronic journalism for the past 50 years.

In 2009, Graham received the Rob Downey Citation for exceptional service to the RTDNA board of directors. She is a member of the Online News Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Press Club, Journalism Women Symposium, the American Society of Association Executives and a past fellow of the RIAS Berlin Commission’s German-American Journalist Exchange Program.

Graham served six years as a board member for DC Metropolitan Dress for Success, a nonprofit organization that helps welfare-to-work women transition into the workforce. She continues to serve as a volunteer and Giving Society member.

Graham has a Bachelor of Arts in English from Old Dominion University in Virginia with a minor in marketing. She is an alumnus of the distinguished Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, FL graduating from two training programs in Ethics and Leadership.

Graham resides in Alexandria, VA where she enjoys taking advantage of the diverse cultural and historical opportunities in the Washington, D.C. area.
