Please Support AFPF Today!

Let's celebrate 25 years of AFPF—and 25 more!

Using the successful 2007 Challenge Fund for Journalism campaign as the archetype, the children of Alfred and Jean Friendly want to honor the idea that their parents had to create the program more than 25 years ago, by matching every contribution, dollar for dollar, up to $25,000!

Jean and Alfred Friendly did not know a quarter of a century ago how their idea for an international program of press fellowships might develop. But they were convinced the idea of helping journalists and journalism in developing countries was very much worth doing. Since they began this program in 1983, the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships has provided developing world journalists the opportunity to work as reporters at American newspapers for five months. In the last five years we have refined the program for increased journalistic and cross-cultural impact by expanding the enrichment activities we offer to our foreign Fellows, creating partnerships, hosting forums, sending American journalists overseas to conduct training and requiring the Fellows to conduct journalism seminars upon returning home. Now, after 25 years the question has been well resolved.

In looking forward to the next 25 years, the Friendly family has turned to a very distinguished group of journalists and other professionals, recruiting them to work on the Alfred and Jean Friendly Foundation’s board and tasking them with making sense of journalism exchanges in the 21st Century. They have come up with exciting ideas for new forms of exchange, for partnerships and for continuing education that takes advantage of the very different new technologies now available for getting information to a broad public.

Please help us with our Anniversary Challange to raise, at a minimum, $25,000 in donations from our individual supporters by December 31, 2010. Because donations will be matched 100 percent by the children of Alfred and Jean, this is an amazing opportunity for AFPF to raise at least $50,000 to support the program and its growth. Please show us your support by making a donation to AFPF today (see below for details).

Here’s how we might use your gift:

  • $20 will help provide journalism books, like the AP StyleGuide, for Fellows or their home newsrooms.

  • $100 will cover a conference or workshop registration for a Fellow.

  • $300 will provide a Fellow’s domestic airline ticket from Washington, DC to their host city.

  • $500 will allow a Fellow to organize a training session in their home country.

  • $1,000 will pay one month’s stipend for a Fellow.

  • $2,000 will buy an international airline ticket for a Fellow or an American going overseas to conduct training.

  • Every gift matters and every giver makes a positive difference. Please make a donation today! There are several ways to lend your support:

    Donations from the United States

    1. Check in U.S. Dollars. AFPF receives every penny when you send a check in U.S. Dollars, made out to the Alfred Friendly Foundation, to:

    Suite 1310
    Washington, DC 20036

    2. Use PayPal. Make a donation from your bank account or using a credit card with PayPal. You will need to establish a free PayPal account. Click on the yellow "donate" button below which will take you directly to the AFPF PayPal donation page. When you make your donation, please indicate that it is from you. PayPal then notifies AFPF that a donation has been made. PayPal keeps 3% of the donation as their fee.

    3. Network for Good. Make a credit card donation through Network For Good. Please note that in order to donate through Network for Good, your billing address must be in the United States. Network For Good keeps 3-4% of the donation as their fee.

Other Ways to Contribute to AFPF

    1. Web Design Help. We want to undertake a re-design of our site. Help with conceptualization to final product would be great.

    2. Laptop computers. We are looking for laptop computers for our Fellows to use while in the United States. Additional laptops will be sent home with the Fellows for use in their newsrooms in developing countries.

    3. Digital cameras and digital recorders. For use by Fellows when they are in the United States. Digital equipment will be donated to the Fellows’ home newsrooms.

    4. Projector. We seek a projector that our trainers can use in sessions with the Friendly Fellows.

    5. Stamps. We send lots of letters and could use stamps of any denomination!

    6. Frequent Flier Miles. One of the largest expenses of the program is flights. Consider donating your frequent flier miles to AFPF.

    7. GoodSearch and GoodShop. Another way to help AFPF is by conducting online searches and doing your online shopping through GoodSearch.com—a new Yahoo-powered search engine that donates half its advertising revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. Simply go to GoodSearch.com and enter “Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships” in the space that asks “who do you GoodSearch for?"

GoodShop.com is a new online shopping mall which donates up to 37 percent of each purchase to your favorite cause! Hundreds of great stores including Target, Gap, Best Buy, ebay, Macy’s and Barnes & Noble have teamed up with GoodShop and every time you place an order, you’ll be supporting AFPF. Simply go to GoodShop.com and enter “Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships” in the space that asks “who do you GoodShop for?”
