"A free press is the best, the most effective, the most constantly functioning instrument by which a people, a community, a nation looks at itself and finds out who and what it is and what it is doing."

Between February and May of this year, AFPF Advisory Committee Chairman, Jonathan Friendly, and Executive Director, Susan Albrecht, visited with 45 Fellows from 17 countries in seven cities. Fellows were brought together in Beijing, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Johannesburg, Lagos, New Delhi, and Washington DC.

The round-the-world trip was decided upon by the Friendly family at the annual meeting of the Alfred Friendly Foundation in November 2003. After 20 years (1984-2004), it was time to evaluate the program to see if it is still relevant and, if so, what can be done better to meet the current needs of journalism around the world. It was decided that Jonathan and Susan would visit with Fellows to discuss the impact AFPF has had on their personal and professional lives and ask for guidance for the future. The trips were also an opportunity to meet with potential AFPF applicants, the bosses of our Fellows, and offer additional training to Fellows and local journalists in Beijing, Lagos, New Delhi, and Istanbul.
